Tigers Rebound With Tie At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Like Friday night, Princeton surrendered two quick goals – allowing Brown to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead in 42 seconds.

Brandon Pfeil scored first for Brown, and then a neutral zone turnover led to Sam Lafferty’s breakaway tally.

But unlike Friday night, the Tigers (3-15-2, 1-12-1 ECAC) stopped the Bears’ (4-16-1, 1-12-1 ECAC) offense from that point, and rallied back to tie the game on Saturday night.

“We played consistent for 60 minutes, and there [were] no ebbs and flows like yesterday,” Princeton coach Ron Fogarty said.

The teams skated to a 2-2 final after an overtime that featured quality scoring chances for both teams, Princeton and Brown skated to a 2-2 tie. The programs are tied for last place in the ECAC.

Near the end of the second, Jonathan Liau popped the water bottle with a top-shelf, game-tying goal. Liau recorded an assist as well, and became the first Tiger to reach double digits in scoring this season. He now leads the Tigers with four goals.

With the game knotted in the third period, Kevin Liss was ejected for a contact to the head penalty. A high-sticking call on Matt Lorito took away some of the man advantage, helping the Tigers kill off the five-minute penalty.

The first period featured a low number of shots and an evenly-matched contests, until latter in the period. With 51 seconds left, freshman Eric Robinson scored his second goal of the season. It was Robinson’s first tally since he scored in his first collegiate game, a tie against Yale at the Liberty Hockey Invitational.

“He just has to be consistent,” Fogarty said. “That’s been the theme today, is make sure you’re consistent for 60 minutes. We need him to be very good for us 5-on-5.”

The Tigers failed to score on any of their three power plays, and killed two of three penalties.

After being replaced on Friday night, Colton Phinney returned to the net. He made 31 saves.

“[He] gave us a chance to win,” Fogarty said.
